The talk radio market has been dominated by Newstalk ZB and RNZ for a number of years. In March 2022, MediaWorks New Zealand launched a brand new talkback, news and sport station, Today FM, which they believe is ‘the most exciting moment in this category in a very long time.’ Securing a raft of top quality producers and presenters touted to be formidable teams who will challenge the status quo, their aim is to grow an under-served audience of 40- to 54-year-olds and become part of their audience’s lives. TV and Radio journalist and presenter Rachel Smalley kicks off each weekday at 5.00am with ‘First Light’, followed by seasoned producer Carol Hirschfeld and ex senior political reporter Tova O’Brien heading the cast with the ‘Tova.’ show from 6.30am – 9.00am weekdays.
