Macca’s trials the cheeseburger with a mullet

After a wave of social posts calling for it, Macca’s is running a limited, one-night-only trial of a quintessentially Kiwi creation, which fans are calling the McMullet.

On Saturday, April 18, McDonald’s Penrose will be offering a free mulleted cheeseburger to any customer who turns up rocking the mullet hairstyle. And for those not yet living the ‘business in the front, party out back’ lifestyle, there’ll be barbers on site ready to give curious customers a trim to match.

All about having fun

McDonald’s New Zealand marketing director Luke Rive says the one-night-only opportunity is all about having a bit of fun with fans and testing ideas in real time.

”When we saw the videos on social we thought why not? It’s definitely tongue-in-cheek, but it’s also a fun way to bring fan ideas to life with live trial to see how many mulleted Kiwis show up to claim their burger. It’s a fitting tribute to a discerning army of Kiwi mulleteers!”

Penrose general manager Cameron Whiteman adds that Penrose felt like the perfect spot for a limited run.

“Whenever there’s a big game nearby, we tend to see a strong showing of mullets in the restaurant, so it seemed like the natural place to give this mulleted masterpiece its first run.”

Burger in front, party out back

For those who can’t make it to the event, the DIY hack for “burger in front, party out back” is simple: order a cheeseburger with an extra slice of cheese and let it hang out the back.

“It’s the perfect accompaniment to an actual mullet, whether it’s a full perm mullet, a buzz mullet or the classic Westie mullet,” Rive adds.

The cheeseburger with a mullet limited offer will take place at McDonald’s Penrose between 2pm and 4pm. The best mullet of the night will win a year of free cheeseburgers with extra cheese and 12 months of free mullet haircuts, meaning they can enjoy a burger in front, party out back and keep their mullet trimmed at all times.
