O’Neill integrates with MediaWorks

MediaWorks TV has signed Alana O’Neill up as general manager of integration, replacing Melanie Reece, who’s heading up the New Zealand operation of Pandora.

O’Neill will join MediaWorks from SparkPHD, where she has held the role of media director for the past four years, leading a team to develop and implement innovative media strategies integrated across the media, digital, PR and activation spheres.

“Alana has an outstanding background in developing and implementing innovative media strategies across television, radio and digital,” says MediaWorks TV director of sales and marketing, Liz Fraser. “Her skill set and experience, from agency sales to television broadcast, make her the perfect person to lead our award-winning MediaWorks Integration team as they develop new formats, creating innovative solutions for our clients.”

Her career spans more than 20 years in the media and communications industry in both New Zealand and Australia and prior to her role at SparkPHD, she was business director at Initiative Media, one of Australia’s original standalone media companies. Her earlier CV includes media director for Channel I, a boutique media and production division set up to develop new formats and deliver locally produced, long-form advertorial solutions for clients, such as their highly successful ‘Food in a Minute’.

She was the inaugural general manager for DDB Digital NZ, launched in 2000 as one of the first companies targeting the emergent interactive comms sector, has held agency account management roles at TVNZ, TV3 and private radio sales and marketing consortium PRISM, and worked in television broadcast production at Avalon.

“MediaWorks Integration sets the standard in this market when it comes to creating integrated solutions for clients,” says O’Neill. “From the enormously successful marquee shows like The X Factor NZ and The Block NZ to creative campaigns like ‘Kiwi Favourites’, I’ve admired the work of this talented, innovative team for some time. I’m looking forward to leading them to new successes.”

She will take up her role in late November.

Jock shock

After posting an opinion piece about the Len Brown affair on NBR Online, senior NBR journalist Jock Anderson was sacked by publisher Todd Scott last week.

In a statement Scott said: “We do not comment on internal employment issues but I can confirm Mr Jock Anderson was dismissed yesterday [Wednesday 16 October] for failing to comply with specific instructions to treat coverage of the Len Brown affair in an impartial and unbiased manner.”

Anderson’s story was posted online but was removed shortly after.

Anderson told stuff.co.nz: “It wasn’t a ‘pro-Len Brown’ piece. But it said he should remain as Mayor so that he and his new council could continue the work on multimillion-dollar projects.”

And he told the NZ Herald: “I don’t believe I’ve committed an offence which should lead to me being summarily dismissed. I’d like all parties to take a deep breath and step back to come to a civilised and business-like resolution.”

This is the second time Anderson has been fired by the NBR. The first was in 2006 and it led to a legal battle (he wrote about the dismissal here). He then worked at The Truth but returned to the NBR in 2009.

From phones to food

Jo Jalfon has shifted from Telecom to take up the role of group manager of communications at Foodstuffs.

She was previously acting head of external media/PR and head of experiential at Telecom and before that she was communications manager at DB Breweries.

Flying off

After 11 years with Air New Zealand, Kelly Millier is returning to take on the role of head of brand communications with New Zealand Lotteries.

According to AdNews, “Millier ran the market development team for Air NZ in Australia for the last three years and has been responsible for driving revenue in the region. She is yet to be replaced. The airline’s marketing division was restructured earlier this year, splitting it into two divisions to bring the organisation in line with the way it operates in other regions.”

Millier led the three-year Kiwi Sceptics campaign, the airline’s biggest Australian advertising push in the last ten years, which aimed to encourage Australian travellers to reconsider New Zealand as a destination.

NZ Lotteries named a number of new marketing team members in August last year, with Val Green taking over from Wendy Rayner as general manager of marketing.

Les Mills for Lwindi

After a few years as group account director at Eleven and a stint with Bullet PR, Lwindi Ellis has taken up the contract role of global head of PR and communications with Les Mills International

A new thief

Michael Duignan, award-winning director of drama, short films and commercials, has joined Thick as Thieves.

His latest project, a short film entitled ‘Ten Thousand Days’ a surreal comedy based on one man’s conviction that he will die on his 10,000th day has been featured as a Staff Pick on Vimeo and Short of the week, as well as numerous international festivals. It will feature in Interfilm Berlin in November.

As Filmshortage.com said: “Director Michael Duignan’s uncanny vintage style is something to be remembered for, which so readily fits with the film’s comical sense, taking on allures from films by inspired filmmakers like Hal Hartley, David O Russel and Spike Jonze. Timing and pace propels this film into an epic, intently low-budget dark humor, matched by brilliant location scouting, cinematography and overall feel.”

“The film shows Michael’s unique talent for comedy, genre and tone,” says executive producer Nik Beachman (who also produced the short). “Diggers is a filmmaker of true depth and range, he’s also a old mate of the Thieves so it’s a natural fit for us.”
