Poppy Appeal goes virtual, puts focus on mental health

NZME is showing its support for the RSA’s annual Poppy Appeal with a campaign asking its readers and listeners to donate and #PinAPoppy to their social media pages.

Featuring a dedicated site, www.pinapoppy.co.nz, the campaign invites the audience to visit the site and donate. Donors will receive access to a digital poppy they can share on social media.

The website also draws attention to the theme for this year’s appeal, ‘Not all Wounds Bleed’, which puts a focus on mental health. The hope is it will raise awareness of the non-physical injuries veterans and their families face upon combat.

National president of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RNZRSA) BJ Clark says the Poppy Appeal is vital for the care and support of New Zealand’s 41,000 veterans and their families.

“Every year we find more veterans needing help and that can be from very small needs through to major life challenges that require significant support and care. Through the generosity of Kiwis RSA can be there and offer that help. We genuinely appreciate all those who put on the poppy and make a donation during the Poppy Appeal.”

NZME chief executive Michael Boggs says the company is proud to be supporting the appeal again this year, adding the funds received from the appeal will benefit a lot of people who have made big sacrifices while serving their country; and the families of those veterans.

“The RSA has previously benefited from the generous nature of our readers and listeners and we hope New Zealanders will get behind this very important cause.”

This year marks the 96th year of the appeal, making it the oldest continuously running appeal.

Poppy Day is 20 April, but you can donate and #PinAPoppy from today until 25 April.

Realityvirtual’s Simon Che de Boer recently had a hand in documenting one of the world’s most ancient civilisations in VR. And now, he’s keen to get to work on his passion project: local cultural preservation work of the Christchurch Cathedral. He wants to resurrect the old Cathedral in VR using publicly sourced photography, so is putting out a call to the public to submit any photos or videos they have of the building pre-earthquake, and using deep learning, a company can fill in the missing data and build a VR experience around this.
