Queenstown Airport Corporation – which manages both Queenstown and Wanaka Airports – has launched a new brand showcase with Shotover Media called ‘Why Do We Fly?’. The ad introduces the stories of aviation in the area, delving into the history of flying before taking a close look at the wider flying community, all with the backdrop of the stunning scenery the Southern Lakes region provides.
Shotover Media developed the ideas with storytelling craft and cinematic skills at heart, inviting the audience to meet the people working at the airports. The cinematic ad is part of a wider doco-series called ‘Why Do We Fly?’, also produced by Shotover Media, which will follow. The series will champion pioneers from past and present, and encourage people to dream about the future – while celebrating the diversity of the airports and the region.
Shotover Media director James Perry says the team have been working closely with the region’s aviation community for a number of years so they were interested in showing the depth of character within the community.
“The ‘Why Do We Fly’ project is definitely a huge challenge in its scale, but having the chance to share these stories with the world is a great opportunity and something we’re extremely proud of.”
Shotover Media director Pete Whittaker says the plan early on was to demonstrate the romance of aviation, and that meant they needed to be up in the air.
“Shooting with a Shotover Camera System over the Mount Aspiring National Park during one of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen was a career highlight for me.”
With the ad featuring a number of puzzling flying shots, Shotover Media also released a behind-the-scenes video to show audiences how they achieved the shots above the iconic Southern Lakes district skyline.
