Te Whānau o Waipareira and Motion Sickness win two Purple Pins at Best Awards

Motion Sickness and Te Whānau o Waipareira have received two Purple Pins at this year’s Best Awards. Both Pins were awarded to the ‘Proud To Be Māori’ campaign in the Public Good and Moving Image categories.

“We achieved outstanding success because we had non-Māori who were willing to treat us equally and accept our worldview, because finally there is a rise in a new generation of Kiwi where Māori culture helps to define our distinctive specialness on a global stage.

Whānau Waipareira has always embarked on a journey of self discovery,  self management and self determination. That journey must take multiple avenues where we represent our capability and capacity. For too long too many others have spoken for us and about us. It’s our time now to demonstrate we have always had the capability and capacity,” says Awerangi (Durie) Tamihere, CCO at Te Whānau o Waipareira

Judges noted the importance of seeing a campaign that focuses on acknowledging and celebrating being Māori.

“Such a simple and powerful statement. Pride explodes from the images and the execution is perfect. Emotional and crystal clear. The gentle, but brutally impactful anti-racism campaign is a slow burner. Slowly, slowly working to dismantle the tacit approval of everyday racism.”

“Not only was it our first ever Purple Pin, but it was also an incredible moment to see a campaign with Māori at the forefront be recognised on a stage like this. Working alongside the talented team at Te Whānau o Waipareira over the past year, we have had the opportunity to grow a deeply rewarding relationship – a community that we were invited into, to grow, learn and collaborate with. We would like to say thank you, for the trust and opportunity,” says Sam Stucbury, Executive Creative Director at Motion Sickness.

Purple Pin winners showcase the enduring social, cultural and economic importance of New Zealand’s world-class design. The Institute has this year awarded seven Purple Pins – its highest honour – to recognise truly outstanding work.

These have been awarded to:

  • Clemenger BBDO Wellington & Assembly: Voice of Racism
  • Extended Whānau. Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.
  • Motion Sickness : Proud to be Māori
  • Alimetry: Gastric Alimentry
  • RTA Studio, Irving Smith Architects: SCION Innovation Hub – Te Whare Nui o Tuteata
