Journalists fight for freedom of speech

Pakistan’s The Daily Times took a stand against censorship with a ‘Free my voice’ campaign, which gave readers a taste of having their words inverted.

The need address the issue comes as the fundamental right of freedom of speech is threatening the lives of many Pakistan journalists.

A controversial article about the Islamic country’s blasphemy law was shared on The Daily Times and those who shared their opinions about the story in the comment section became victims of censorship themselves. An algorithm flipped the meaning of the comment, meaning those who praised the article found themselves criticising it and vice versa.

Commenters were then redirected to a campaign page where they could show their support by sign a petition in support or donating money.
