After 20 years at the helm, Daniel Barnes will move on from his role as CEO to focus on strategic projects and client relationships, assuming the role of founder and partner at Barnes Catmur & Friends Dentsu.
“Personally I’m looking forward to spending more time on the new strategic opportunities that are out there for our clients and our own business, and less time in the operational machinery now we’ve got such a strong new support team at Dentsu Aegis Network to cover off areas like HR and Finance,” Barnes said in a statement.
This shift will essentially see Barnes working on specific clients he has a vested relationship with a few days a week and then focus on bigger projects that might demand his expertise, including rebrands, project launches or changes in strategic direction.
The operational management role will be picked up by Paul Catmur, who will vacate his role as executive creative director to pick up the reins as chief executive.
Catmur’s former role will, in turn, be filled by Mick Stalker, who joins the agency on 19 June after a ten-year stint at Colenso BBDO.
“After 16 years as an ECD I’m genuinely looking forward to the different challenges that come with a CEO role,” says Catmur. “With support from Luke, Mick, Daniel, Rob and the rest of the team hopefully I won’t make too big a hash of it.”
Former general manager Luke Farmer’s role will also evolve as he takes on greater responsibility as managing partner at the agency.
These moves come shortly before the Barnes Catmur & Friends Dentsu staff is set to vacate its High Street premises and join the rest of the Denstu team at the offices on Cook Street.
