CarExpert NZ appoints country manager as momentum builds post-launch

CarExpert New Zealand has appointed Mat McNay as country manager.

Based in Auckland, McNay will head up CarExpert NZ after previously serving as commercial director – media in Australia, where he played a key role in shaping the company’s commercial model and building relationships with automotive brands and agencies.

Many of these partners operate across both Australia and New Zealand, providing a foundation as the business continues to scale.

Pivotal stage of growth

McNay’s appointment comes as CarExpert NZ continues to build early momentum following its February launch, with the audience growing more than tenfold in under three months, reflecting demand for high-quality, independent new car content in-market.

In his new role, McNay will lead local operations, partnerships and go-to-market activity, while continuing to build out a high-performing team across editorial, video and commercial.

“Stepping away from CarExpert was not an easy decision, and the opportunity to return and take on this role in New Zealand felt right both professionally and personally,” says McNay.

“CarExpert has already made a strong start in New Zealand, and it’s clear there’s an appetite for expert, independent guidance when it comes to choosing a new car. Having been part of the journey in Australia, I’m excited to build on that momentum locally and grow something genuinely useful for Kiwi car buyers.”

Continuity and capability

CarExpert CEO Damon Rielly says McNay’s return brings both continuity and capability at a critical stage of growth.

“Mat knows this business inside out. He’s helped shape how we work with partners and how we deliver value to both audiences and industry. He also brings established relationships with OEMs and agencies across Australia and New Zealand, which puts us in a strong position as we continue to scale.”

CarExpert New Zealand combines independent automotive content with a growing local team of new car specialists, helping buyers research, compare and purchase their next car.
