AO Dog Show crowns first-ever ‘Best in Show’

History was made on the evening of June 11. The inaugural AO Dog Show took over Studio 230 in Auckland’s Ponsonby.

More than 100 spectators gathered to bear witness. Many are already calling it the most important event in the advertising industry’s canine calendar.

Nine finalists and their humans competed for glory in a series of highly prestigious disciplines. These included the Grand Entrance Parade, the Office Obstacle Course and the crowd-favourite One Trick Wonder.

A True winner

The competition was fierce. Tails wagged. Treats negotiated. Dignity occasionally sacrificed.

After a remarkable display of talent, charm and questionable listening skills, Freddie and Jess from True were crowned AO Dog Show Best in Show. The judges delivered a rare unanimous decision, recognising Freddie’s outstanding performance across all events.

Freddie’s One Trick Wonder truly wowed the crowd. Jess strapped a cocktail shaker to her and, with a few jumps and spins, Freddie shook up the perfect drink for the judges.

People’s fav

The final award of the evening was the coveted People’s Choice Award.

The spirited in-show campaigning would make even politicians blush. Shenanigans included a “Vote Onyx” poster in front of the voting mugs. So no surprise when Onyx and James from The Tuesday Club secured victory and took home the popular vote.

AO Studios founder Paul Courtney says the event exceeded every expectation.

“We want to thank the crew, the sponsors, QT Hotel & Mars Pet, the judges, our president, the owners and most importantly, the dogs. Without all of you, this slightly unnecessary but highly important celebration of industry dogs simply wouldn’t have happened.”

Plans are already under way for the 2027 event, pending venue availability, dog schedules and whether the industry is ready for this level of competition again.

Until then, Freddie remains Best in Show, and the rest of us remain merely human, says Courtney.
