Download free music to your ears

Do you love downloading music, but are afraid of the copyright laws? Luckily, there's now a totally guilt-free, legal way to feed your ears. So, fish out that old library card of yours that's been tucked away in the depths of your wallet since last millennium, and voila! All Auckland library members (from all 55 libraries in the Auckland region) now have access to millions of music files from the Sony Music back catalogue - for free!

The Freegal Music service (an amalgamation of 'free' and 'legal') allows members of Auckland Libraries to legally download selected music from the Sony Music catalogue. Members can download up to three songs or tunes per week and there's plenty to choose from. From Beyonce, One Direction, Brooke Fraser, to Etta James, Jimi Hendrix, and the Foo Fighters, to name just a few.

Louise Lahatte, Auckland Libraries manager of regional resources says Freegal is an opportunity for people to rediscover music they love, or find something new:

"Freegal is an exciting opportunity for library users to make the most of another great service through their library membership. Auckland Libraries has an extensive collection of music books, sheet music and CDs - Freegal takes our music resources to another level and highlights the popularity of digital download services in today's world," she says.

Auckland Libraries members can use their library membership details to access the Freegal Music catalogue, via the Auckland Libraries website. All songs downloaded from Freegal Music can be kept for as long as you like and songs are DRM-free MP3s that will work with almost every portable device. They can even be transferred to CD.

How Freegal Music works:

  • Log in with your Auckland Libraries barcode number and PIN to browse Freegal Music.

  • Each library member can download up to three songs per week.

  • Each song has a sample clip you can listen to before downloading

  • If your download is interrupted or cancelled by accident, you can download it again from the Recent Downloads. You can do this twice, and only for songs downloaded in the current and last week.

Libraries have been surprisingly quick to adapt to new technology, they also have e-books free to download to most e-readers, except for Kindles which should be added soon. Who knew!
