Movings/Shakings: 10 July

A pair of appointments

L-R: Kelly Spice and Rebecca Knight.

Snapdragon Media has announced the addition of two new team members.

Rebecca Knight has been appointed as sales manager, joining from Bauer Media. She will be managing the direct advertising for Kidspot, as well as all advertising across lifestyle brand Her World.

Knight has over 15 years' media experience, and prior to Bauer held a mixture of both digital and print sales roles at the likes of Yellow, The New Zealand Herald and Adrenalin Publishing.

Also joining from Bauer Media is Kelly Spice, who takes over as national agency director for Kidspot. Having just returned from maternity leave, Spice brings a wealth of industry experience in agency sales from previous roles at TVNZ and more than a decade at Bauer Media.

Musical chairs

The Commercial Communications Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Pickering, director of Brand Spanking, to the position of chair for the PR, experiential, and social media committee.

Pickering replaces Adelle Keely, chief executive of Acumen Republic, who has been chair since early 2017.

Pickering is a founding member of PREScom and the Experiential Marketing Association of New Zealand.

In 2007, Pickering established FLUXX: Ideas in Motion, an experiential agency which merged with Brand Spanking in 2015, and is a social media and event technology strategist within Brand Spanking's team.

Paul Head, CEO Comms Council says Pickering "is at the forefront of the experiential marketing industry and his strategic vision will prove invaluable in continuing to raise the profile and strength of the marcomms sector".

Head thanked Keely for her dedication during her time as chair, saying: “Adelle has done an incredible job as Chair of PREScom over the past year and her leadership and guidance of the group has made a genuine difference for our members.”

Pickering says the past 10 years PREScom has worked hard to champion its channels to clients and to the wider marcomms industry through events, rewarding best practice via the Axis and Effie Awards, and by sharing knowledge and insights from the top minds in the business.

"This year will see a focus on showcasing best practice here in New Zealand and overseas in PR, Social and Experiential marketing and in helping to develop badly needed talent for our industries.”

A trio of new faces

Radio New Zealand has welcomed three new hires.

Jo Moir has joined as a senior political reporter in the Wellington Press Gallery. She was previously a senior political reporter for Stuff.

Moir joins alongside Anneke Smith, who has started in a new role as a reporter based in its Auckland bureau covering courts. She was previously a reporter at Hawke’s Bay Today covering a similar round.

Meanwhile, Ben Strang will be joining the general news team based in Wellington from the start of August. He is currently a Sports Reporter for Stuff.co.nz and The Dominion Post.

Preserving Egypt's heritage: how a New Zealander is using VR to take people on a tour through the tombs

The man behind what’s been dubbed ‘the world’s most realistic VR’ is earning worldwide acclaim for his hyper-realistic VR cinematography. Now, Simon Che de Boer’s latest release, Nefertari: Journey to Eternity, takes viewers up close-and-personal in VR to an ancient civilisation that’s not experienced in many people’s lifetimes: Nefertari’s tomb in Egypt. This plays right into the passion driving Che de Boer’s work – to document heritage sites so they’re preserved digitally for years to come.

Drive VR: The ‘world’s first’ virtual reality drivers test has parked up in New Zealand

The ‘world’s first’ virtual reality drivers test is here thanks to a collaboration between Government agencies ACC and the NZ Transport Agency - and external partners Strategy Creative, Mixt Studio, and Flying Saucer - which aims to help young people become confident capable drivers. The project launched in July last year, and has since sparked a 30 percent increase in people signing up on the Drive platform, with more than 30,000 sign ups and almost half a million total users who’ve completed 52,000 online road code chapter tests between them. So, could it see the end of traditional drivers tests?

Are we automating discrimination?

Let’s face it, humans have been known to make some highly questionable decisions. It’s no wonder ostensibly infallible artificial intelligence that promises to remove our human margin of error has been seeping into every industry by osmosis, ours being no exception. But interested parties should proceed with caution.
