Sportal to spotlight Steven Adams and te reo as Perform scores NBA deal

Sportal.co.nz will stream a regular NBA season game each week and offer localised editorial and video under a new deal between its owners Perform and the basketball organisation.

Sportal.co.nz/nba will focus on Kiwi Steven Adams, an Oklahoma City Thunder player, and will feature content and live games from the most popular teams and players in New Zealand, says Perform's Asia Pacific managing director James Rushton. It also has a Maori language version, developed in house in consultation with the New Zealand Government.

The NBA New Zealand Facebook page will have content from the Sportal NBA site as well as team updates, player activity, details of upcoming free live streams, along with contests and activities.

The games will be free to view, with the site supported by advertising. Rushton didn't say which New Zealand advertisers were on board, but said it had "broad interest" from agencies in a number of verticals.

"We anticipate the brand being of appeal to advertisers targeting 18-34 [year old] males and particularly those looking to leverage premium live video content and a highly engaged audience," he says.

Under the three year deal, Sportal will stream 24 live NBA games during the regular season and up to four play-off games, along with daily video highlights and interviews.

NBA's League Pass offers packages for viewers to follow their favourite team's games or all NBA games, live or on demand. Locally supported devices are TV, Apple TV, XBox 360, along with the NBA Game Time app.

Perform also has NBA digital content rights in Australia, Japan and Germany. It also offers live video of women's tennis, European and South American soccer, FIBA basketball, motor racing, darts, hockey and boxing in New Zealand. It also partners to stream live video to offshore subscribers, including SANZAR rugby, the Hyundai A-League, NBl Basketball and ANZ Netball.

The NBA is now offered on the web in 16 countries.
