Kia ora [firstname]

Happy new year! Welcome to the first StopPress newsletter of 2026. Thrilled to have you with us as we gear up for another year of new campaigns, account wins and industry innovations.

Media expert Antony Young returns with his Around the World column, providing a comprehensive wrap up of the media news that has happened in the last week. Catch up with the latest here.

Waikato Theatre has been renamed BNZ Theatre as part of a five-year partnership with BNZ, in collaboration with Live Nation New Zealand. It opens to the public on January 19 with Māori soul singer Teeks the first to perform there on January 23.

Suntory Boss Coffee has named itself the "official coffee of summer" in a new campaign that speaks to the different tribes and spontaneous moments that happen during this sunny season.

Our Year in Review of 2025 is in full swing! Today, Rise and Shine's Luci Marshall provides her thoughts on the year that was. Catch up with the other reviews here.

As we start to look forward to the year ahead, communications agency HMC has provided its five key PR trends. Founder and director Heather Claycomb says it will be a year "where smart, strategic communication becomes even more critical."

There's lots more news on the site, including job announcements from Are Media: Kia Ora magazine editor Virginia Larson is stepping down while Women's Weekly editor Marilynn McLachlan is shifting to a new position as lifestyle editor.

Before you go, I want to share one of my favourite stories to come out of 2025. Herman Jagpal, who runs the social media account @dailyrejections, went on a world tour supported by outdoor advertising company Go Media and House of Travel. What came out of it was some beautiful examples of the universal power of kindness.

Happy reading and if you have news you’d like to share, email editor@stoppress.co.nz.

Have a lovely week, we'll see you on Friday.
