We wrote about the launch of Colenso BBDO’s very cool V Motion Project a few weeks back. And after an “epic journey to create music using the body’s movement”, the creators took their bootleged technology and a projector to an Auckland carpark on Saturday night to show the people what happens when the power of dance is harnessed.
Marketing, advertising & media intelligence
New Zealand is one of the only markets in the world where Red Bull isn't the number one energy drink. That title is held by Frucor's V, and it got there through a combination of savvy NPD and a series of brilliant campaigns. Given what's come before, it's always going to be a challenge to raise the bar creatively, but Colenso BBDO and Frucor have given it a good nudge with their latest effort, the V Motion Project.
Creative types in adland who drink too much V will be overjoyed to learn that registrations are now open for the tenth V48HOURS Furious Filmmaking competition. And, in what could be seen as rather serendipitous timing, the event's founder and self-confessed filmhead Ant Timpson was this week chosen as the Creative Entrepreneur of 2012 by the Arts Regional Trust.
In 2010, Frucor's 'crown jewel' V, which clocks up sales of $250 million in Australasia, was becoming a victim of its own success. It had been very effective in growing consumption with existing customers, but as it already had 55 percent of the traditional energy drink market ...
... (except from vending machines) as Karl Fleet departs Colenso to sit on a throne in the Campaign Palace, Interbrand welcomes a new senior designer, Andrew Spear takes up the rod at NZ Fishing World, PPR shacks up with big comms behemoth Burson-Masteller, Frucor drinks in a new chief executive, Keiran Frost moves up the Orange chain and TVNZ renews its free-to-air deal with Warner Bros.
You've probably seen the TVC. Now the digital component of Colenso's V paintball campaign has been set free. And it employs some pretty nifty online artistry to entertain the energy drink guzzling demographic.

And the fresh TV work keeps on coming, with a new cerebral/agrarian spot for Volkswagen's first ever ute, V takes street art to a new level with the help of Humpty Dumpty, Mitsubishi speaks the car-related, localised truth and Cirkus Animation's TVC for Vietnamese stationery brand Thien Long.
It's the most popular energy drink in Australasia, it's currently available in 18 countries including the UK, Holland, Sweden and Argentina, its marketing campaigns with Colenso BBDO have won a host of prestigious awards, and it's clocking up $250 million worth of exports each year. Well, that's set to rise, because Frucor Beverages has announced that V will soon be available in Spain thanks to a partnership with Frucor’s Spain-based sister company, Orangina Schweppes.
This year's Effies tagline was 'the best ad for advertising'. And it was certainly a pretty good advertisement for Colenso BBDO, which won 12 awards and became the only agency to ever win Most Effective Agency of the Year two years in a row, as well as the only agency to win Most Effective Agency of the Year and Best in Show in the same year. It was a close run thing, however, with DraftFCB nipping effectively at its heels with nine.
Around 50 industry heavyweights, middleweights and lightweights shunned the Ranfurly Shield match last night and instead gathered together at Studio Lumiere in Parnell to talk television. And, particularly, to talk about what the future held for television advertising. Colenso's planning director James Hurman, MediaWorks chief executive Jason Paris and Image Centre Group's Mike Hutcheson enlightened, extrapolated and entertained in equal measure as part of Pure Production's Death, Taxes and TVCs event and, in the first of three posts about each of the presentations, we delve into James Hurman's thoughts on what he feels is a misconception about the death of mass marketing and media.

Who it's for: Frucor/V by Colenso BBDO Why we like it: It was always going to be hard to top the success of—and mystery inspired by—the previous V campaigns, but 'Pomparkour', the new spot—and new sport—from Colenso and independent director Nathan Price ...
While most normal people merely think about ridiculous ideas and never actually go through with them, the beauty of the ad industry is that agencies are often given a big bunch of cash to make those ridiculous ideas come true. And that's exactly what Colenso has done with its latest—and awesome—ladder-inspired campaign for V's new Isokinetic, guarana infused energy drink.
