Fifty years ago the Radio Hauraki DJs, pirates, ‘Good Guys’ (or whatever you would like to call them) were cruising around the Hauraki Gulf on the Tiri, blasting rock and roll tunes out through the airways and into the eager ears of Kiwis from north to south. The Alternative Commentary Collective (ACC) has since its inception in 2012 become a standard part of the Kiwi cricket experience for many fans, who tune in to enjoy a comedic twist on the usual ball-by-ball rundown of the games. Following on from the success of the iHeartRadio-hosted show, frequent contributors Leigh Hart and Jason Hoyte in March 2014 launched Sports Bhuja, a sports-related chat, comedy and music show, which initially aired on radio Hauraki on Saturday mornings—and the segment has proven so popular, that the pair have now been given a slot on Radio Hauraki’s drive time show.

Like rust, Radio Hauraki’s breakfast team never sleeps
By

Radio Hauraki’s newish breakfast team has been getting plenty of love recently, largely as a result of the brilliant Like Mike segment, in which Jeremy Wells channels his inner Mike Hosking in an effort to improve its position as the 13th most-listened to breakfast show in the country. And the station is continuing that quest and aiming to improve its standing in the eyes of those who respect sleep deprivation and alcohol-based fun with a 24 hour stunt called #nosleeptilbreakfast, which saw the hosts take a trip to Waiheke, visit salubrious tourist haunts like Showgirls and SkyCity, hug Leigh Hart’s dog, stay awake and booze all night and then bravely/foolishly do their morning radio show.

Radio Hauraki is in the midst of an existential crisis. And, after rather forthrightly saying it had been pretty shit for the past few years and that it had to kill that station to save it, The Radio Network brand has come out of rehab with a new line-up (Martin Devlin and Laura McGoldrick, Angelina Boyd, Greg Prebble, Matt Heath and The General and Mikey Havoc) and a new campaign at the hands of Saatchi & Saatchi. And, as part of its ‘intervention’, legendary turntablist and Beastie Boys DJ, Mix Master Mike is venturing to New Zealand to celebrate the official relaunch.

Out of the ashes: Radio Hauraki ‘kills station in order to save it’

“For the past few years, Radio Hauraki has been shit.” So says a very frank and rather Back of the Y-esque video clip involving petrol, a lighter and some hearty appliance violence. But with a new look, a new breakfast pairing and a new campaign via Saatchi & Saatchi, the Radio Network claims “things are changing” for the rock station in 2013.
