P&G has been beating its ‘Proud Sponsor of Mums’ drum for a few years now, largely in support of its Olympics sponsorship. And, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mother’s Day, it’s launched another heart-string tugger that’s already clocked up six million views. But not everybody appreciates the sentiment, with Mia Frazier laying into the patronising, regressive stereotypes in the New Republic.

Procter & Gamble and Wieden + Kennedy decided to celebrate mothers’ roles in the creation of world-class athletes in a campaign that ran as part of its sponsorship of the London Olympics. And it’s back with another earnest spine tingler focusing on winter sports for the upcoming Sochi games in Russia. P&G-owned brand Old Spice also released an ad about mothers recently, although the musical ode to those who can’t let their teenage boys go is quite a bit different from that of its parent company.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) will break a 26-year-long tradition when it begins its first ever New Zealand brand campaign on Sunday night.  P&G owns supermarket brands such as Pantene, Duracell and Gillette but had, until now, deliberately remained in the shadows of its brands.
