It’s a celebration of creativity where the humble envelope is given a chance to shine. And tomorrow night at Deus ex Machina in Auckland, with Kiwi pop star and t-shirt dealer Dave Gibson on MC duties, the winners of the 2010 Art Of The Envelope Awards will be announced. A relative outsider has stormed through the pack to take out the supreme award in the inaugural New Zealand edition of The Maggies, with the January 2010 issue of women’s surf and snow magazine Curl beating out the big boys to take Magazine Cover of the Year.
New Zealand Post has been in the news recently after announcing the arrival of ‘Localist’, a start-up directory business that aims to target Auckland’s small to medium sized businesses, where the local advertising market is thought to be worth around $600 million a year. Yellow responded to the threat with an $8 million investment and the promise of 100 new national sales roles. But away from all that excitement, New Zealand Post Targeted Communications has launched another marketing toy called iTRY, a digital-to-mail sampling solution that gives companies an opportunity to get their products and services into the hands of consumers to trial.
It was beaten by cat food at the EFFIES. But the DraftFCB trio of Antony Wilson, Iain MacMillan and Kate Murchison have eased the feline-related pain slightly by taking out the first monthly Art of the Envelope Award for their transparent effort called ‘the Naked Letter’.
The industry is gearing up for its Effie fest on Thursday night. And for those lucky/immensely talented enough to have made it through to the finals, as well as all the other tag alongs present for the festivities, there are plenty of extra-curricular activities on offer from the event sponsors, including the official post-awards shindig that’s being put on by The Radio Bureau (TRB) and New Zealand Post Targeted Communications’ slightly mysterious mobile-phone related tomfoolery.
The marketing campaign for the Art of the Envelope awards was pretty sexy. And so are the first three monthly finalists, with Dave Rogers from Geon Group, Guy Needham from Les Mills and Antony Wilson, Iain MacMillan and Kate Murchison from DraftFCB all making the cut.
The numbers have been crunched, the Kiwis have been canvassed and the companies that consumers believe are the best—and worst—have been announced, with New Zealand Post coming out on top and Telecom bringing up the rear.
Of course, the main reason for holidays is to inspire jealousy, so family, friends and, if you’re feeling so inclined, your arch enemies, can now be sent a personalised greeting card at the push of a few buttons thanks to the launch of Send a Card for iPhone by New Zealand Post.

So get in quick if you want to hear their numerous pearls of wisdom.
Candida, Kinetic 121 and New Zealand Post Targeted Communications have sounded the horn for entries into this year’s Art of the Envelope awards. When New Zealand Post isn’t deciding what marketing-related events to sponsor, it’s devising ways to make some more money to pay for them all. And the Targeted Communications team thinks it has a big one on its hands with Genius, a ground-smasher of a new data segmentation product that aims to provide Kiwi marketers with the most targeted consumer information available in New Zealand.
Ah, the magazine cover. How we love the way you capture the consumer’s attention. How we love critiquing the efforts of our competitors. And how we love the mixture of art and science often required to create a stunner. Well, undercover cover lovers rejoice, for The Maggies have been shipped in from the UK and entries for the inaugural New Zealand competition are now open.
This week I had the pleasure of doing a repeat performance at the Marketing Association’s network of executive marketers event. And the task was just as daunting the second time around. How do you pick out just a few interesting trends from the plethora of new things available? Well, I just turned to what’s being talked about, not just things we’re on about at the moment, but things we can see a good body of evidence for internationally.
