DDB picks up Newspaper Ad of the Year, makes it two in a row

The ninth edition of the annual awards show was hosted at AUT and again organised by the industry body News Works. And this year, the attendees from DDB left with the biggest smiles as the agency picked up the most coveted award: the Newspaper Ad of the Year. Illustrating that the greatest ideas don’t always have to be complicated, the judges awarded the gong to DDB for its simple VW print ad that drew attention to a Beetle sale.

Call for entries: News Works Newspaper Ad of the Year

Entries are now open for the 2014 Newspaper Advertising Awards, with the usual prize of $10,000 for Newspaper Ad of the Year. Last year, DDB won it with its YWCA advertisement promoting equal pay for women with the headline “from now until the end of the year, women will work for free”. This year, there’s a thousand-dollar media lunch on offer too.

Message on a bottle: Running with Scissors and The People’s Wine take October newspaper accolade

Running With Scissors’ new campaign for The People’s Wine caught our attention a few weeks back and it’s also found favour with the judges of the October round of the newspaper ad of the month awards, who said “there’s a story here … more of a personal interesting take on a wine ad”, “Kiwi, unpretentious and great to see longer copy” and “beautifully crafted and great use of a newspaper magazine.”

Last night at the Aotea centre, newspaper folk from across the land gathered to show off their wares to media and creative agencies and guest speaker Peter Thomson presented a fairly convincing case for the future viability of newspapers. And this year, the newspaper expo was topped off by the announcement of the newly rejigged Newspaper Advertising Awards, with Saatchi & Saatchi walking away with the $10,000 prize and the ad of the year honour for its very practical Valentines Day ad for Tui.
