Every year, with the growing prominence of data, the skills used in direct marketing to target specific segments with personalised messaging becomes more important to marketers. For this reason, direct marketing is shifting from the fringes, where it existed as uncool but necessary, to play a key role in the industry. And as was indicated by the creativity on show at this year’s edition at the annual New Zealand Direct Marketing Awards, the industry is also doing a good job at improving its cool factor.
On a dark and windy night, six advertising-employed goth bands slithered into the King’s Arms, fishnets, face powder, bad eyeliner and all, to pay homage to the likes of 1980’s goth bands The Cure, The Cramps and movement-starters Bauhaus. And despite straying from the theme and playing songs which you couldn’t really call gothic, Colenso BBDO aka Pegasus and the Job Numbers were crowned the winner of this year’s Battle of the Ad Bands organised by CAANZ and Flying Fish, after a polished and upbeat set that wooed the crowd and judges alike.

Last night’s 26th edition of the annual NZ Direct Marketing Awards at Auckland’s Langham Hotel was a lavish affair, which was hosted by comedian Ben Hurley and the Marketing Association’s chief executive Sue McCarty, who recently resigned from her position. In total 41 different awards were handed out over the course of the event, and by the end of the night the attendees from Colenso BBDO/Proximity and iSite Media must’ve had tired legs due to the number of times they were called to the stage.
The finalists of the NZDM Awards have been announced, with Colenso BBDO/Proximity and justONE/.99 leading the field on 13 each and Loyalty NZ next on ten.
