Posties finally choose an agency, and its name is … still unknown

NZ Post has taken its sweet time choosing a new agency to replace long-time partner Saatchi & Saatchi, which decided not to repitch for the business when the expressions of interest were called for in December. The pitch was thought to have finished more than six weeks ago and it seems a decision on its new agency has been made. But no formal announcement has been released and the lips of the Posties and the two agencies thought to be battling it out for the win—Clemenger BBDO and DraftFCB—are staying sealed.

Kiwi nomination numbers up as 2011 Clio shortlist announced

The One Show shortlist was announced last week and, for the Kiwi agencies, it was a big improvement on the previous year. And it’s the same story for another big New York award show, Clio, with 12 New Zealand entries making the cut, up from five in 2010. DDB managed three, JWT, Colenso and The Sweet Shop got two and Clemenger BBDO, DraftFCB and Strategy received one each. There were no Kiwi nominations in the interactive, direct, integrated, print or student categories. The awards will be handed out on 19 May.

Copywriting & Art Direction and Typography: DDB + Clemenger BBDO

In the copywriting section, which included both print and electronic, DDB took bronze with its Noland ad for Sky’s Arts Channel, while in Art Direction & Typography, Clemenger BBDO’s Hamlet-inspired book sculpture for Booksellers New Zealand was awarded a silver and DDB’s Catalogue and Tee Shirt Folding Machine for AS Colour took bronze.

Earth Hour 2011 may have only recently wrapped up, but Clemenger BBDO’s ‘Ads In The Dark’ campaign has reaped the rewards for its efforts to draw awareness to last year’s Earth Hour, picking up a silver award in the charity category. The campaign featured popular commercials from Fatso, Instant Kiwi and McDonald’s, previously bathed in full light, being lit by only candlelight. Picking up the only other award in the category, also a silver, was DraftFCB for its ‘Make a friend in real life, not just online’ Facebook app for the SPCA.

2011 is the anniversary of 100 years of radio in New Zealand and to mark this auspicious occasion Clemenger BBDO and Radio New Zealand launched the ‘Sounds Like Us’ campaign, which asked Kiwis to create a radio design that captured any aspect of New Zealand culture from the past 100 years. But to inspire the masses, it came up with a few radio designs of its own and these outstanding sonic/visual creations were good enough to take home a gold Axis in Design.

And while Yellow Pages is wrestling with a few rather large financial demons at present, the pair’s impressive award-winning run continued last night at Vector Arena, when Yellow Chocolate was awarded the Grand Axis, the Titanium gold Axis and the Integrated gold Axis at the 2011 CAANZ Axis awards.

The first round of finalists for AWARD have been announced, with Special Group, DDB, DraftFCB, Colenso, M&C Saatchi, Clemenger BBDO, AIM Proximity, Flying Fish, The Sweet Shop, Film Construction, YukFoo and Curious Film among those that made the cut in the Direct Marketing, Craft in Film and Craft in Print categories. More category finalists will be announced soon and the awards will be dished out on 25 February.

DDB NZ has added three new team members to its creative department, but it’s still on the hunt for a creative director to replace Adam Kanzer, who left in mid May. And Clemenger BBDO is in a similar position, with former creative director Paul Nagy yet to be replaced and a new managing director still to be found to replace Lesley Brown, who departed about 18 months ago to have a baby and chose not to come back.
