Zap boots adult children out of the nest

With many Brazilian adults yet to leave the nest, real estate portal Zap turned to FCB Brazil to help parents give their adult children a hint.

Called ‘Hint Books’, the project gives parents a helping hand to get adults to move out by teaching them all they need to know about surviving on their own.

Three three types of adults that are still living with their parents have been identified—those waiting for marriage, those who keep studying and those who are unable to look after themselves—and a book suited to each one has been made. For example, those who can’t look after themselves will learn about food expiry dates, washing, folding fitted sheets, frying eggs and doing the dishes.

There’s also a glossary explaining words like ‘bills’, ‘bleach’ and ‘other complex stuff’.

The books are available to be ordered or downloaded from the dedicated project website.

The number of adults living in their parents home is growing and the phenomenon has been given the name ‘Kangaroo generation’ (referring to joeys that only leave their mother’s pouch when they’re ready to so so).

According to The Rio Times, the number of 25- to 34-year-olds living at home was 21.2 percent in 2004 and 24.5 percent in 2013.

But it’s not just Brazil, according to The Mercury News, in the US, 24 million 18- to 39-year-olds lived with their parents, which was an eight percent increase since the previous decade.

And according to US News, Italy, Slovenia and Greece have the highest percentage of youth living at home – with more than 70 percent of 15- to 29 year-olds cohabitating with their parents.
