In New Zealand and in many other places, the female nipple is commonly censored among mainstream media outlets. Social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram are guilty of removing images of women with bared breasts. But now women have been illustrating the absurdity of the idea of a mere areola making something rude by photoshopping male nipples onto their breasts, while the results are pretty funny, they also make a bold statement.
The woman behind the idea is Micol Hebron from California who created the campaign. “Here you go – you can use this to make any photo of a topless woman acceptable for the interwebs,” Hebron said. “Use this ‘acceptable (male) nipple template’, duplicate, resize and paste as needed, to cover the offending female nipples, with socially acceptable male nipples (like a digital pasty). You’re welcome.”
Hebron originally posted the image in 2014, but it has since gone viral.
This photo of a jumper shared by Scout Willis featuring two topless women was removed from Instagram. Willis wrote at the time “Women are regularly kicked off Instagram for posting photos with any portion of the areola exposed, while photos sans nipple – degrading as they might be – remain unchallenged.”
