Leading by example: the chief executive-based publicity stunt

Chief executives as the front-person in ad campaigns have been a long-held staple in the advertising space, but the majority are often boring and overused, with voiceovers set to a kitschy hipster montage or “walk-n-talk’s” directly addressing the consumer (shout to to Chanui). But here are a few that over-the-top/down right dangerous stunts that don’t fall into that trap.

One chief executive taking the danger approach to the next level is Texas Armoring Corporation’s R. Trent Kimball, who got behind the driver’s seat while sales manager Lawrence Kosub shot the windshield with an AK47.

If that’s not belief in their product, then we’re not sure what is.

This follows on from the likes of Volvo’s campaign featuring company president Claes Nilsson also risking life and limb.

And while Air New Zealand’s ex-head Rob Fyfe was never in mortal danger, he did strip down for the Nothing to Hide campaign.

Getting the leaders involved in these ways is fun, crazy and attention-grabbing. But no outrageous campaign will ever out-do the (fictional) Kenny Powers.
