Burger King serves up a surprise literacy lesson

September was World Literacy Month and to mark the occasion, Burger King New York gave its drive-thru customers a cryptic surprise.

When customers approached the window to order, they were greeted by a menu riddled with jumbled letters that made ordering their meal a struggle. Only after some apparent frustration and a request to drive onto a window to see the Burger King staff, did they learn why they were unable to read anything.

According to the World Literacy Foundation, one in five people cannot read or write and Burger King hopes to make a difference to that with its Burger King McLamore Foundation. Named after the restaurant chain’s co-founder James McLamore, who believed in higher education for all, the foundation was set up to advance the education of deserving students in North America, as well as the families of Burger King employees.
