Year in Review: Hilary Barry, TVNZ

Every year, StopPress asks players in the local industry for their reflections on the marketing year that was. Here’s what TVNZ’s Hilary Barry has to say.

1. Biggest local story

Earthquakes in central New Zealand in November. Ferocious in magnitude and hugely destructive, everyone in New Zealand had immediate flashbacks to the devastation that hit Christchurch in 2011. Though the loss of life wasn’t as great, the disruption and destruction was still extensive.

  • Check out the StopPress picks of the year here.

2. Biggest international story

The horror in Syria; it’s a civil war that’s raged for more than five years, killed nearly half a million people and left millions of Syrians without a country to call home. New Zealand called out other countries to take action when it chaired the Security Council this year but still there’s no end in sight to the suffering.

3. Favourite story you’ve covered

The rise and rise of Donald Trump. Widely ridiculed and dismissed as a joke, the brash and abrasive businessman rolled Hillary Clinton in a remarkable election. We were on air with a live news special when the results became definitive later in the afternoon. The shock and awe around the world was remarkable. When he heads to the White House early next year, it’ll be fascinating (or deeply concerning) to see how his “presidential” style develops.

4. Biggest industry shock

John Key’s resignation. Didn’t see that coming.

5. Most significant launch/innovation/thing of the year

Whittaker’s chocolate butter. OMG, if you haven’t tried it, lather some on a hot croissant and thank me later.

6. What should be un-invented?

Whittaker’s Chocolate Butter, for the sake of my bum and thighs.

7. Lamest trend

Quinoa – the biggest waste of space in a salad since alfalfa. Dental floss anyone?

8. Best stoush

The US Presidential Debates – all three, in no particular order. “Nasty Woman” was my catch-cry for weeks and now I have the cap too which Jack Tame brought back from New York. Win.

9.Heroes

Foster Parents everywhere. Amazing people nurturing the most important taonga we have – our children.

10. Villains

Putin.

11. What died in 2016?

Fitbits. Just don’t.
