X Factor NZ debut not a spectacular, but still provides MediaWorks with good numbers

The X Factor New Zealand, the latest of many popstar search programmes, debuted on New Zealand screens on Sunday to much publicity in the form of TVC campaigns, billboards and online advertising. The ratings coming out in the wake of the first two episodes haven’t blown any ratings records to shreds, but X Factor NZ is providing MediaWorks with a solid opening act.

The one and a half hour long season premiere averaged 467,000 viewers aged 5+ according to Nielsen Media (via Throng). MediaWorks says a total of 1,066,000 people tuned in at some point in the opening show. On Sunday TVNZ had X Factor NZ beat with its Sunday news show (7:00pm – 7:30pm) which averaged 681,000 viewers (aged 5+) and MasterChef NZ (7:30pm – 8:30pm) with 552,000 viewers. However, in the lucrative 25-54 demographic X Factor NZ had almost 70,000 more viewers and won a 31.9 percent share of the 18-49 group.

Last year’s premiere of The Block NZ had an audience 375,000 (5+) viewers, so the X Factor NZ definitely steps it up a notch.

Episode two screened last night garnering an audience of 450,000 (aged 5+) viewers. Combined with its time-delayed TV3plus1 airing, the total was more like 512,000, says MediaWorks. Even without the plus1 numbers, this is almost double what the company was achieving last week with Drug Busts in the 7:30pm – 8:30pm slot. Again X Factor NZ was beaten by a TVNZ product in the aged 5+ category, with direct competitor My Kitchen Rules (7:30 pm – 8:30pm) bringing in 454,000 viewers.

MediaWorks says there were 45,000 streams of the full episodes by midnight Monday, with the premiere accounting for 80 percent and Monday’s show the rest. In addition a similar number of shorter video segments and audio clips were also downloaded. The #xfactornz hashtag was trending on Sunday and Monday nights on Twitter.
