Penguin Random House calls on Kiwis to contribute to special edition Mother’s Day book

Usually, at least some part of Mother’s Day involves scouring through hundreds of generic Mother’s Day cards in search of the one that features a phrase (crafted by a writer you don’t know) that roughly captures the way you feel about your mother. However, this year, book publisher Penguin Random House is challenging Kiwis to put their creativity to the test by penning a few lines, which could potentially be included in special edition book, titled Thanks Mum: A Kiwi Celebration, in time for Mother’s Day.

With an over 80-year history of supporting mums worldwide with everything from pregnancy and parenting advice, to bedtime stories and ‘mum time’ escapism; the publisher is looking to further consolidate its relationship with mums.

As part of the campaign, New Zealanders have been invited to share messages, anecdotes or memories about their mums for the chance of contributing to the book and becoming a published author.

Penguin Random House New Zealand’s campaign manager Emily Conradi says the chance to be apart of Penguin Classics will appeal to those who have grown up reading the books and hold an element of nostalgia towards them.

“This campaign offers the chance to be a part of Penguin Classic history, and is a great way to communicate a heartfelt thank you to their mums in a way that will be immortalised forever.”

This is not the first time Penguin Random House has put out the call to make New Zealanders authors. In 2011 it published White Out, a tribute to the historic snowfalls that New Zealand encountered in August that year, and asked those who felt the cold to share their stories.

Conradi says it received an “overwhelming response” with entries including scenic, quirky, beautiful and often funny photos.

Penguin Random House anticipate a few hundred messages will be published in Thanks Mum and says all successful entrants will receive a copy to gift on Mother’s Day.

Entries can be submitted online via www.thanksmum.co.nz and close on 29 February.
