TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards 2018: the New Zealand Automobile Association and AA Insurance crowned Supreme

Last night, at the Cordis Hotel, the New Zealand marketing industry celebrated the best in business. And while there was plenty of success on show, it was The New Zealand Automobile Association and AA Insurance that took out the Supreme Award, while Simon Jarvis from New Zealand Racing Board (TAB) was named Marketer of the Year.

Returning for his eighth year at the TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards stage, was host Te Radar, who attempted to keep an excited crowd under control. The theme ‘Same Tools: Different Results’ was paired with TVNZ’s launch of Project Runway New Zealand so fittingly the night kicked off with a video watching him create an ensemble inspired by Chadwick Boseman’s Met Gala outfit.

Te Radar’s opening was followed by Marketing Association CEO Tony Mitchell and ICG Media publisher and editorial director Ben Fahy taking to the stage to discuss the coming together of strategic brilliance, creative excellence and impressive commercial results.

Showing off their impressive results was Supreme Award winner was The New Zealand Automobile Association and AA Insurance, that picked up the coveted Award after already scoring the Consumer Products & Services, Best Brand Extension/Innovation and Best Collaboration awards.

The Supreme judges said AA’s award entry demonstrated a high level of strategic marketing nous.

“There was a clear line of sight on the business problem at hand that, if left unresolved, had the potential to be a showstopper in the future. The team demonstrated excellence in end-to-end execution of the marketing value chain – where the customer is very much at the heart. It was a complex project that disrupted BAU thinking. Marketing has clearly led this to drive impact, extending the AA’s trusted brand position into a new category – tapping into existing customers and recruiting new blood. Solid foundations have been set.”

Another double winner was the Health Promotion Agency, with its Best Use of Sponsorship win for Smokefreerockquest 2017 and the Healthcare/Beauty Award for its Oral Health Campaign – ‘Baby Teeth Matter’.

And while not a double winner on the night, Subaru’s and Barnes, Catmur & Friends Dentsu’s win of Long-Term Agency Partnership comes after the duo was declared the most successful marketing partnership across Asia-Pacific at the annual APAC Marketing Awards event last week.

Fly Buys was also a repeat winner, taking out the B2B Award for the second year in a row.

Also enjoying deserved wins were Air New Zealand, Auckland Council, BP Oil New Zealand, Earthwise Group, FMG, Genesis, Harrison Grierson, Health Promotion Agency, J H Whittaker & Sons, Movember Foundation, New Zealand King Salmon, New Zealand Racing Board (TAB), NZME, NZSki, Samsung Electronics NZ, Subaru of New Zealand, T&G Global, The Warehouse, Trustpower and TSB Bank.

While there was plenty for organisations to celebrate throughout the night, as the night drew to an end it was time for individuals across the industry to be celebrated.

This year, it was Simon Jarvis from New Zealand Racing Board (TAB) taking home the Marketer of the Year Award. On stage he thanked his team for their work and expressed his pride in the results they’ve achieved since he joined the organisation in December 2016.

The Rookie Marketer Award went to Rebecca Barnett from Loyalty NZ who also used the opportunity to thank her team and congratulate her fellow finalists.

The biggest round of applause, however, went to Kevin Bowler as he was inducted into the TVNZ Marketing Hall of Fame.

TVNZ’s Blacksand created an inspirational video including speeches from the Honourable Sir John Key, past inductee Theresa Gattung and fellow colleagues of Kevin’s. TVNZ CEO Kevin Kenrick presented Bowler with his accolade saying:

“Kevin is a business person with some great marketing skills, he is someone who understands the commercial side and creative side and brings it all together to make some magic.”

The organisers of the Awards, Marketing Association and NZ Marketing/StopPress, particularly wish to acknowledge the support of the Award sponsors: premier sponsor TVNZ, principal sponsors Adshel and Energi and category sponsors Bauer Media Group, BrandWorld, GrownUps, Mailshop, Nielsen, Skykiwi, TRA and TRB.
