Top 10 Magazines: AA Directions remains strongest, KiaOra sneaks back in

Nielsen has released its National Readership Survey Q2 2016 – Q1 2017 to reveal New Zealand’s top 10 magazines according to readership. And holding strong at the top is AA Directions while KiaOra pipped NZ Geographic at the post to reclaim its spot on the 10th rung.

Similar to the previous survey, AA Directions firmly holds the top spot with 837,000 readers, which has grown from 805,000 in Q1 16 – Q4 16. NZ Woman’s Weekly follows behind on 594,000, up from its 581,000 readers in the Q1 16 – Q4 16 survey.

The rest of the top 10 also remains stable, however, the Australian Women’s Weekly grew its readership from 481,000 to 506,000 to move from seventh position to fifth.

Further down, KiaOra grew its readership from 316,000 to 334,000 to reclaim its 10th spot after NZ Geographic edged into the top 10 for the first time in the previous survey.

However, NZ Geographic’s move to 11th position isn’t something for it to get disgruntled about as the magazine grew its readership from 318,000 to 335,000 readers.

Also not in the top 10 but reporting massive growth is Time, with 146,000 readers in the latest survey compared to the previous 128,000 readers. Meanwhile, NZ Rugby World dropped to 179,000 readers from 194,000.

Not included in the Nielsen figures is Bauer’s new title Nadia, which launched in October last year. However, that’s not stopping Bauer from boasting about its results, as Nadia was ranked number one in the women’s health and lifestyle category and second in the non-weekly retail titles in the March 17 ABC Circulation audit. The bi-monthly publication has an average net circulation of 43,161 copies per issue according to the audit.

According to the announcement by Bauer, the magazine’s performance has been bolstered by a strong digital and social platform, 100 percent on domestic retail performance, a dynamic marketing campaign, a rapidly growing subscriptions base and a distribution partnership with My Food Bag that sees each issue of the magazine being delivered to premium and desirable My Food Bag customers.
