Spark consolidates Skinny account under Colenso BBDO’s roof

Colenso BBDO has been appointed as the lead creative agency for Spark’s low-cost mobile and broadband provider Skinny.

StopPress understands the incumbent agency was Many Minds, although it’s thought it stopped working with the brand late last year.

The appointment comes following a pitch as Spark looked to unify its approach, consolidating the brands into one agency. The agency will be the above the line lead across brand, product, activation and social. This move now sees the Clemenger Group of agencies Colenso BBDO and PHD manage the multi-brand strategy and communications across both Spark and Skinny.

Colenso BBDO has been working with Spark since it was appointed as its above-the-line brand agency in 2015. Vanessa Nicol, managing partner for Spark across the Clemenger Group, said “this was a pitch that didn’t feel like we were pitching” (StopPress has asked who else was involved in the pitch and who the incumbent agency was and we will update the story when we hear back).

“We worked collaboratively alongside the team throughout the process. The win now allows us the ability to manage both brands (Spark and Skinny) strategically, creatively and operationally, working with retail and digital agency Platform29 to achieve commercial success for both brands.”

Ally Young, Skinny brand manager, says it’s excited to move into a new phase with Colenso BBDO.

“This is an exceptional agency that has developed and executed incredible Spark work to date, so we look forward to replicating award-winning and customer-centric campaigns with the Skinny brand now as well.”

The Skinny win follows a couple of account losses for the agency this year, including Samsung going to FCB and Burger King consolidating its business with Y&R.
