Stand up Sandy Moore

All the best ideas in the business were recognised last night at the Axis Awards, and one of the best men in the business was recognised too, with advertising veteran Sandy Moore accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award was a big surprise to me; I had been told that I was to introduce a different recipient (whose name shall forever remain anonymous) so I was blown away when my name appeared," says Moore. "It’s a huge honour bestowed by my peers and I am truly humbled by this accolade."

Moore says he actually spent quite a long time writing a speech for the supposed recipient (those words might be used next year) and when asked if he would celebrate the win in traditionally debauched advertising style, he said: "I think I might go home for a cup of tea and lie down."

Justin Mowday, who took over from Moore as chief executive of DDB New Zealand in June last year, says there is no more deserving person of the award than him.

"He really has dedicated most of his working life to this industry. He’s set the benchmark in many areas, not least having some great stories to tell to his grandchildren."

Moore joined DDB in 1990 from his previous role as chairman/chief executive of Leo Burnett (prior to this he had marketing management roles with major corporates such as Philips Electronics and Honda Cars) and was appointed managing director and partner in 1994.

In 1998 he became the group managing director of DDB’s integrated below the line marketing communications group, Beyond DDB, and he was group chief executive of DDB New Zealand between 2007-2013 (DDB NZ and Australia chairman Marty O'Halloran hinted in the victory video that Moore's love for DDB was so strong that he actually has the company's logo tattooed on his arse). Moore remains a director at DDB and is the current president of CAANZ.

He has put more time into charity work since stepping back from DDB, particularly in his role as director/trustee of the Ronald McDonald House. He's also a big fan of the neigh neighs and is a current board member of the Auckland Racing Club. His other interests include reading, collecting watches, watching sport (rugby), photography, pinot noir and 12 year old malt whisky.

Outgoing Spark CEO Simon Moutter talks transformation, diversity and leaving a legacy beyond just metrics

Simon Moutter has just wrapped up a seven-year tenure at Spark, where the changes the company has gone through under his reign are nothing short of radical. From its name change (Telecom to Spark) and its operating model (traditional to agile), to its culture (publically called out to inclusive) and its structure (monopoly brand to many). Elly Strang sat down with Moutter had a candid chat about his journey to CEO and how one of his biggest lessons was he couldn't solve a culture issue with process and strategy.
