Revamped Magazine Awards celebrate the best in the publishing biz, Bauer back with a vengeance

A room full of publishing talent and their supporters gathered at the Q Theatre in Auckland for the refreshed Magazine Awards tonight and it was Woman’s Day, Idealog, North & South, NZ Life & Leisure, Oh! Baby and NZ Rugby World that took the major wins.

With Bauer, the country’s biggest magazine publisher, back in the mix after a hiatus from the awards, it was certainly more of a level playing field this year. And, perhaps not surprisingly, it went home with a good haul from a number of its titles across the various categories (see winners below).

“The Magazine Awards are largely a celebration of the craft of magazines but also important recognition for the role craft plays in our commercial success,” says John Baker, chairman of the MPA. “Our editors, designers, writers and photographers, along with our sales and marketing teams, collaborate to create some of the best examples of magazines globally.”

The judges commented: “Overall the quality of all entries was high, with a wide variety of initiatives and ideas. The winning entries, however, demonstrated strong consistent themes, with an intimate understanding of their target audience.”

Sarah Sandley, ex APN/NZ Magazines and now chief executive of Auckland Sport, was awarded the lifetime achievement award. No supreme magazine award was handed out this year.

Bauer Media, with support from Webstar and NZ Post, have published a magazine showcasing the winners, which will be sent out to awards attendees, advertising agencies and key clients, as well as being distributed via NZ Marketing.

The winners and their work can be viewed at this website
