Radio survey: RNZ National increases lead over Newstalk ZB and RadioLive

In the wake of last week’s commercial radio celebrations, Radio New Zealand has something to cheer about following the release of its survey results by GfK. RNZ National has maintained its spot at number two for audience reach against its commercial competitors and saw growth where other news stations saw a drop.

Since the last survey, Radio New Zealand has grown its audience, with National and Concert together reaching of 604,000 New Zealanders aged 10+, equating to 15.1 percent of New Zealanders (aged 10+), in a typical week. In the previous survey, that reach was 600,200 New Zealanders.

Alone, RNZ National reaches 535,200 different New Zealanders each week, 13.3 percent reach of all 10+ New Zealanders. It also achieved a 10.5 percent share of the total weekly radio listening in New Zealand, a slight drop from the previous survey in which it had a 11.1 percent share.

However, the station’s reach has grown from the 529,000 10+ New Zealanders it achieved each week in the previous survey.

When compared to RNZ’s commercial competitors, these numbers put RNZ National at number two for weekly cumulative reach, below The Edge (659,600) and above More FM (515,700). This position has remained the same as the previous survey.

RNZ National is also continuing to pull in bigger numbers than its news competitors Newstalk ZB and RadioLive—both of which experienced drops in their weekly reach. Newstalk ZB now sits at 459,000, down from 503,600, and RadioLive achieved 240,400 after last survey’s 251,000.

While the total cumulative reach of each station can be compared, RNZ’s percentage share cannot be compared to the commercial station share, which is based on share of radio commercial listening only.

For all stations, commercial and non-commercial, the ears of morning listeners are considered to be of great importance, and the surveys breakfast results show RNZ National reaches 379,800, or 9.5 percent, different people aged 10+ across New Zealand. This is a market share of 12.9 percent of the total radio listening audience at that time of day.

These numbers put RNZ National in the top spot for breakfast listening as, Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking Breakfast reaches 297,900 different people aged 10+ across New Zealand while RadioLives’s Paul Henry Show reaches 153,900.

RNZ Concert also saw a drop in its reach this time round, with an audience of 153,100 compared to the previous 156,200. Its current 2.3 percent share of the total weekly radio listening sits just shy of its previous 2.5 percent share.
