Orcon business banner keeps on giving as Webby nominees announced—UPDATED

Over 10,000 entries were submitted from around the world and the nominees for The Webby’s, AKA the Oscars for nerds, were announced this week. And Special Group’s ‘Living Office’ web banner, New Zealand-based Drugs.com and Supply’s ‘Scam Machine’ for Netsafe are the only local contenders up for an award, while Resn, DraftFCB, Alt Group, Oh Baby, Fairfax and APN all received the next best thing, official honoree status.

Orcon’s ‘Living Office‘ has to be the best use of a banner space ever in New Zealand (it was clicked on 48,000 times in just ten days) and the judges of the internet’s biggest awards felt it was one of the best uses of a banner space anywhere after putting it into the top five in the Interactive Advertising – Rich Media Business to Consumer category.

It has already picked up two silvers at AWARD in Australia and four golds at Axis, including the second gold in a row for Special in the ‘big axis’ Interactive category. So get voting here and help the Special gang deliver their victory speech, which, as always, is limited to five words.

Drugs.com, which is owned and operated by a privately held trust administered by two New Zealand pharmacists and hosted in a data center in Virginia, USA, was nominated in the best health website category.

The official honoree awards give a specific shout out to the efforts that didn’t quite make it into the top five, and Resn got two, one in the weird category for iamsimonpeter.co.nz and the other for Best Visual Design – Aesthetic for Kanvas Game.

The iPad apps for NZ Herald and Stuff were both got the nod in the ‘News – handheld devices’ category (Associated Press, BBC News, CNBC, Engadget and NHK World TV live) and www.ohbaby.co.nz was recognised in the family/parenting website category (it had the same honour bestowed on it in 2009 and 2007, so it’s doing something right).

Auckland based multidisciplinary design firm Alt Group took the honour in the Fashion category for its design of the Karen Walker website and DraftFCB followed suit in the Health website category for The Journal.

Across the ditch, there were four nominees: Amnesty International Australia by Reactive; There’s Nothing Like Australia by Tourism Australia; Party at your Place by George Patterson Y&R; and Monkey Mayhem by Deepend, Sydney.

Voting opened this week and the winners will be announced on 3 May. Funny Or Die received 10 nominations, The New York Times website received 18 and Arcade Fire is also among the nominees.

Let us know if we’ve missed any official honorees out and check out BJ Novak’s rather entertaining welcome speech from last year.
