Colenso BBDO, DDB and OMD the big Kiwi winners at Campaign Asia Pacific Agency of the Year Awards 2015

Colenso BBDO has been crowned the New Zealand creative agency of the year at the Campaign Asia-Pacific Awards, beating strong competition from DDB and Special Group, which claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

Scott Coldham, the agency’s managing director, says the achievement is both “humbling and awesome in equal measure”.

“There’s a load of work that goes into creating an environment where our clients and the agency are able to realise diverse and effective creative work – so it’s really pleasing to see that recognised.”

Another big winner on the night was DDB, which claimed the award for New Zealand Digital Agency of the Year (Colenso and Special Group came second and third, respectively) as well as the gong for Australia/New Zealand Digital Agency of the Year,

The agency’s chief executive Justin Mowday is very proud of the achievement, which he says is a reflection of the hard work which his committed team puts into their digital campaigns.

“We have a superb digital and social team at the heart of our business who do fantastic work, and this award is testament to the modern style of everything we’re touching these days. It’s great to be recognised as the agency at the forefront of the changes in our industry, doing the best digital work in the marketplace.”

This year’s results sees New Zealand’s lead digital and creative agencies trading places, after last year’s show, which saw DDB walk away with the creative agency of the year gong and Colenso with the digital agency award.

In other news from the awards show, OMD has been named the 2015 NZ Media Agency of the Year by Campaign Asia-Pacific, making it the agency’s third year on top in this category of the awards (Mediacom and SparkPHD claimed silver gongs and Vizeum won bronze).

OMD also won gold in the Australia/New Zealand Talent Management Team of the Year.

The awards mark a very successful year for OMD, which earlier earned the number one ranking by RECMA.

OMD NZ chief executive Kath Watson says the award of Talent Management Team of the year is an endorsement of OMD’s holistic vision to unite the company culture behind a common goal.

“We established a clear three year strategy for the business driven by our belief that people are our differentiator. By fostering a people culture we create positive external relationships. Ultimately, happy staff translates to happy clients.”

Adriana Botha, OMD NZ Talent Management team, people and development director, was thrilled by the win, particularly as this was OMD’s first year entering the category.

“Creating the right culture, work environment and growth opportunities, enables us to deliver fantastic award-winning work year on year.”

Back in May, StopPress reported on OMD’s win in the Yahoo New Zealand digital strategy awards for their “Pepsi On” promotion in which the agency created a customised microsite within Yahoo entertainment as a digital hub for teenagers. The site brought together content from ambassadors, Yahoo and social media, and hosted three Pepsi parties, which were created by teens, for teens and with all-teen attendees. Here is video of one of the parties.

Botha will accept both awards on behalf of OMD New Zealand at the gala awards dinner in Singapore on 10 December.
