NZ House & Garden covers itself in blue-hued glory with Maggies win

NZ House & Garden’s April issue, which was shot at the home of avid antique collector Sandy Smith, has won the Magazine Cover of the Year at The Maggies.

Initiated by online subscription company, iSUBSCRiBE, the 80 covers entered in the second year of the competition were shortlisted to 25 by a panel of industry heavyweights and then put to a public vote over five weeks. The NZ House & Garden cover was also declared winner of the Lifestyle category.

Editor Sally Duggan described the winning cover as a “classic harmony of blue, white and green with mad, mixed-up touches”.

“Unlike decorating your own home, which is a success when you think it is, creating a winning cover involves pleasing a cast of thousands,” she said. ”The clever mixture of beautiful things presented on the April cover was actually a long drawn-out creative process by art director Richard Brunton and stylist Sarah Charles, which involved three separate visits to the historic art-filled Petone villa where it was photographed.”

“Look carefully at our cover this issue… Now look closer. Note the mad, mixed-up touches: the upside down bowl; the tea cup balancing on a jar; the misplaced silver lid, the knot of ribbon that looks just right,” says Duggan in her editor’s letter back in March. “I wish I could say we were clever enough to fling these arrangements together effortlessly.”

In the other categories, New Zealand Doctor (May) was crowned business and trade winner, Healthy Food Guide (March) was named the best food and wine cover, Antarctic (June) took out the specialist category and Adventure Magazine (December) reigned in sports.

Hmmm, slightly depressing really. So here’s a link to Creativebloq’s 20 best covers of 2012.
