New Rule: Change your passwords before you fire the social media team

British music store chain HMV has learned the hard way that you don’t mess with your company’s social media team. Earlier this morning (evening in the UK) several tweets broadcasted the firing of HMV staff, to the beleaguered music chain’s 73,000 Twitter followers.

A member of staff with access to HMV’s Twitter account tweeted the layoffs as it was announced to staff.

“We’re tweeting live from HR where we’re all being fired! Exciting!!” says the first tweet.

“There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution of loyal employees who love the brand,” says another.

The tweets spanned over thirty minutes before it was stopped, and included an allegation of illegal behaviour by the music retailer. The disgruntled ex-employee even says HMV’s marketing director was asking people how to “shut down” Twitter.

It’s unclear how many of these messages were posted, but at least seven have been deleted from the account since this morning.

HMV, which went into administration last month, responded through its Twitter account, and says the earlier messages were posted by an upset employee.
