Last of the big spenders: NZ top 10 a familiar story

Our biggest media spenders over the last three years are a familiar story, with supermarket and retail giants making up an unchanged top three.

Nielsen data for the 2013 calendar year, based on ratecard value, show Foodstuffs New Zealand at the top with $88,674,813, Progressive Enterprises second at $81,361,631 and the Warehouse third with $71,017,317.

That was a drop on the previous year for Foodstuffs, with $85,763,193; a rise for Progressive which spent $77,512,978 at ratecard value last year and an even bigger jump for the Warehouse, whose outlay was $62,419,814 last year.

For the total 2013 year, Telecom replaced Harvey Norman at number four, with Harvey Norman slipping down the list to sixth. Vodafone slipped into tenth place last year after being absent from the top 10 media spenders for the previous two years.

ANZ Banking Group’s spend was ninth last year at $44,557,214.

The companies that made the top ten last year reflect Nielsen’s category data which had supermarkets as the number two category, banks at number four, discounters and warehouses at number five, department stores at six and mobile phones at seven.
