Home is where the art is: ACP and Inhouse launch redesign with web video

Youtube VideoAs a grand finale to its 75th anniversary year, the Home New Zealand editorial team and Inhouse design have given the mag a spruce up for the Dec/Jan Summer issue. And, to showcase both the new design and the collaborative process required to create it, they’ve produced a cool little ‘home movie’.

It’s been a tough year for the mag, with total New Zealand net circulation down 19 percent from the year previous and readership down 22,000 in the latest Nielsen results. But, as editor Jeremy Hansen says, the magazine has a long history of celebrating the creativity of New Zealand’s design leaders, and the readers expect the magazine to show design leadership, too.

“The redesign is part of our ongoing effort to live up to this amazing legacy and create a contemporary magazine that inspires our readers to live better,” he says.

ACP publisher Lisa Ralph says at the heart of it, magazines aim to inspire and tempt. And even more so when it deals with such an aesthetic, aspirational subject matter.

“We are always excited to see the magazine come together, and more so with a new look. We wanted to give our partners the opportunity to come on that journey with us,” Ralph says.

Inhouse has worked alongside the Home New Zealand art team on past projects, including last year’s retooling of the HOME masthead and developing the magazine’s 75th anniversary logo.

“We were already big fans of what Inhouse do and felt we worked well together, so when our former art director Miranda Dempster was lured back to New York last August, it seemed natural to ask Arch [MacDonnell, who’s now working with Shine] and his team for their ideas about how to keep the magazine’s design fresh and contemporary,” says Hansen.

It’s certainly a bit of an improvement from this in 1971.
