Dulux appoints Assignment Group for creative project

Paint manufacturer Dulux has appointed Assignment Group to work on its creative account in the local market on a specific project.

According to Nielsen ad spend figures for the past three years, Dulux has been the second biggest advertiser in the paint category over the last three years, spending $8.9 million in that time.

The only advertiser to have spent more is Resene, which has tallied up a spend of $12.5 million over the same period.

The high spend numbers among paint retailers indicate a strong market, possibly buoyed by the strong property market in recent years.

This has also been reflected in the strong financial performance of major DIY retailers, such as Mitre 10, which in 2016 paid its highest dividend to shareholders in 17 years.

The last New Zealand-based creative agency to have worked on the Dulux account was Clemenger BBDO, but managing director Brett Hoskin says the agency has not worked on the account for a number of years.

“Dulux NZ actually consolidated their business to Australia a few years ago as part of an Australasian brand alignment,” he told StopPress. “It’s good to see them returning to New Zealand.”

Neither Dulux nor Assignment Group would comment on the appointment.

Update: This story has been updated to reflect that Assignment has been appointed to the account to work on a project rather than serving as the agency of record.
