Driver drives off into the sunset

Fairfax Magazines has purchased Driver magazine and will merge it with New Zealand Autocar from the May issue, after it became clear to John Baker, of former Driver publisher Tangible Media, that the publishing landscape had changed and two magazines devoted to new cars couldn’t be supported, particularly given the large decrease in sales of new cars in recent times.

Like New Zealand Autocar magazine, Driver has been offering guidance and expert advice for new car buyers for almost two decades. And with the amalgamation of the smaller title into its bigger competitor, New Zealand Autocar editor Kyle Cassidy says the combined offering will provide readers with the best of New Zealand automotive content.

“Our magazine has always offered motoring news from around the world and what’s new to market, but its real strength lies in the local car testing, local reviews from Kiwi writers and a New Zealand perspective on new cars.”

Lynley Belton, general manager of Fairfax Magazines, agrees that the acquisition of Driver magazine is good news for New Zealand car enthusiasts and the wider motor industry.

“The merging of Driver into New Zealand Autocar reinforces Fairfax’s commitment to the local new car market,” she says. “Anyone in the market for a new car, or wanting to stay abreast of the options in the new car market, will be delighted to find all they need and more in New Zealand Autocar,” said Belton.

Baker says Driver founder Allan Dick has played a massive role in publishing in New Zealand and Classic Driver will continue to be published by Tangible Media with Dick continuing his involvement.
