Designworks reigns supreme

In a year where the profession of design claims to have been devalued by the Super City logo competition, Designworks has bucked the trend and restored a bit of pride, taking out the Supreme Award at the 2010 Vero Excellence in Business Support Awards last night.

New Zealand’s Dear Leader John Key handed out the award to Designworks’ group chief executive Sven Baker, who says it was a fitting reward for delivering tangible business results to its clients despite last year’s difficult business environment.

He says the core strength of the company has always been understanding the gap between where a company wants to be, where its management thinks it is, where its staff think it is and what the market thinks of it. And he says Designworks prides itself on the ability to “design the most successful New Zealand brands in the world.

“The award highlights how our approach has supported some of New Zealand’s leading companies and organisations in the past 12 months. The success of projects for the likes of AMI Insurance, Monteith’s, Silver Fern Farms and Auckland International Airport, and SMEs such as Methven, HotChilly and Leap, demonstrate how we support our clients through the changing business landscape with the right ideas to help them achieve their longer term goals.”

Interestingly, he didn’t mention the work done for Telecom.

“We are particularly thrilled with the success of brand development projects for SMEs. SMEs are the backbone of the New Zealand economy and our design work with both HotChilly and Leap has had a profound and lasting impact on their business performance. Leap has turned around an annual decline in revenue into a doubling of revenue three years running. And HotChilly has also trebled the size of its business and expects further growth in the future.”

The awards are now in their sixth year and are a key event in the lead up to the annual Bizzone Business Expo, New Zealand’s largest event for business.
