Celebrating local TV: NZ TV Craft Awards winners and NZ Television Awards finalists—UPDATED

Last night New Zealand’s TV talent celebrated the technical nouse of local producers at the New Zealand Television Craft Awards, and it was Lippy Pictures’ Jean that owned the night as it claimed eight of the 10 awards on offer. PLUS: the finalists of the New Zealand Television Awards have been announced.

The Jean Batten biopic received Best Editing: Drama, Imagezone Best Cinematography: Drama, Best Contribution to a Soundtrack, Images and Sound Best Original Score, Best Post Production Design, Best Art Direction or Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup Design.

Meanwhile, Born This Way: Awa’s Story by Ruckus won Best Editing: Documentary or Factual, and Best Camerawork: Documentary or Factual. The documentary tells the story of Te Awarangi ‘Awa’, an 18-year old openly transgender teen from Wellington who is transitioning from male to female.

But it wasn’t just about craft last night as the finalists for the remaining New Zealand Television Awards categories were announced.

It’s the first time the awards ceremony is being held since 2012, after it was cancelled due to discussions between organisers ThinkTV and major partners TVNZ and MediaWorks. At the time, TVNZ told The Herald, it had decided against supporting the awards as they had become a two-horse race between TVNZ and Three.

This year, the 86 finalists across 25 categories are spread across TVNZ 1, TVNZ 2, Prime, Three, Sky TV, Maori Television and digital platforms including stuff.co.nz, TVNZ OnDemand, The Coconet TV and more.

However, while TVNZ is once again supporting the awards, it did not enter its newsroom. While there are limited categories solely dedicated to new and current affairs the awards are focused on entertainment categories.

“We think news and entertainment content is distinct and that’s what guided our thinking,” says general manager of corporate communications Georgie Hills.

“Our view is that the awards would be better focused as screen producers’ awards – as in Australia – concentrating on entertainment video content as a complement to the Canon Media Awards, which celebrate quality journalism and video excellence by all local media players.

“We support the initiative to recognise the craft skills of the local production industry so we’re proudly supporting our production partners who have entered their work made for TVNZ – and representatives from our content team look forward to celebrating with them on the night.”

This means The Best News Coverage and Best Presenter: News and Current Affairs categories are dominated by Three.

All the finalists can be viewed here. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday, 30 November at the SkyCity Theatre.
