Everyone has something to say about last night’s nail biting election and, thanks in a big part to social media, local brands were just as vocal. Some took it as a chance to build rapport with their online following, while others tried to be a source of relief.
When the vote counting began to look more and more in Trump’s favour, Powershop posted a cute but terrifying reaction with a still from their latest TVC (also running at prime-time) with a simple ‘Uh Oh’. It was shared as a sponsored Facebook advert and struck a chord with many watching the results in New Zealand.
Serious Popcorn chose to break the election news in a colourful and surreal way, in keeping with their Instagram account of contemporary graphics.
Air New Zealand cheered up their followers this morning with $5 Grabaseat flights on offer around the country. With an image of the $5 note, their Facebook post read: “Here is a Hillary that will brighten up your Thursday morning”. Thank goodness for Sir Ed.
And Air New Zealand has since released this video on its online channels, offering a bit of an escape.

Burger Burger were quick to post an image of a shamed Statue of Liberty and attest the goodness of their American inspired burgers, saying “At least you don’t have to go to the US to eat the BEST BURGERS IN ALL THE WORLD!!!”. Many emojis followed.
Fashion brand World shared the same image as Burger Burger on Instagram and followed it up this morning with a hat they think says it all.
TV channel TVNZ Duke tried to have a bit of a laugh with their mostly young male demographic with a branded joke. Right, right?
Clothing retailer Superette wanted to know who its shoppers were voting for. Safe to say some comments were awkward…
And Al Brown’s American themed Federal Delicatessen is promoting their Canadian dish of poutine on Facebook, simply saying: “Canada is looking like a good option”. And it looks like the right option for comfort food too.
Meanwhile, Mai FM couldn’t resist a Kanye meme.
And Volvo’s full page ad in the NZ Herald today made the most of a fraught election trial on both sides, hop in everyone!
