Beam Global and Young & Shand embrace the meme, butter up Kiwi bar tenders

The 'Shit People Say' meme kicked off with a couple of stunners that clocked up 16 million and 8 million views respectively and then rapidly went downhill as everyone climbed aboard that particular bandwagon. But Beam Global has brought it back for its Bar Legends trade campaign, with a clip made by Young & Shand (eager eyes might be able to spot Mr Shand featuring in the video) and The Down Low Concept detailing some of the interesting scenarios Kiwi bar tenders have to put up with.

wym-1341444950027The campaign is just getting started, but, as you'd expect, there's also a big Facebook component to it and Calem Chadwick, Beam brand ambassador, says it's all about finding someone who's "got that special gift that makes a punter’s night and makes the people they work with want to come in to work and do a 12 hour swing shift".

"They can tell stories til the lights come on, could possibly be a part-time comedian with all their jokes and can still pour bloody decent drinks too," he says. "So if you were hoping to show off your signature cocktail made out of elderflower and the pulp of some unpronounceable fruit, then you’re out of luck. And if you can shake cocktail mixers round your back and juggle spirit bottles—well done. But we’re not interested sorry."

Bar tenders can click the entry tab on the Facebook page if they think they've got what it takes or others can nominate someone who fits the bill. The only requirement is they work in a bar in New Zealand and range at least eight Beam brands.

And the prize is a good'un: an all-expenses paid trip to a Beam distillery in Kentucky, France, Mexico, The Caribbean, Scotland, Ireland or Canada, an expense card to the value of $200 per week for 12 months to spend on whatever you like, plus, just to keep the boss happy, the stock for a staff or customer party at the bar to the value of $5000.

"We’re looking forward to this competition, because we know there’s some primo talent out there that needs to be rewarded with a bit more than a $2 tip," Chadwick says.

And while we're on the topic of Shit People Say spin-offs, here's one that was created by and managed to chalk up close to 50,000 views.
