Axis 2017: Colenso BBDO, FCB and DDB set to battle for the trophies

CAANZ has released the finalists for the upcoming Axis Awards, and it’s shaping up to be Colenso BBDO’s night as it makes the list 94 times, followed by FCB Advertising and DDB Group both with 43 entries and Ogilvy & Mather behind with 42.

Last year’s Grand Axis winner Saatchi & Saatchi makes the list six times.

This year’s awards attracted 375 entries across the 83 categories that have so far been judged by Regan Grafton (Ogilvy New Zealand), Michael Redwood (Special Group), Brigid Alkema (Clemenger BBDO Wellington), Shane Bradnick (DDB), Tony Clewett (FCB) and Christy Peacock (TBWA).

Included in the categories are the new Branded Content and Creative Use of Media categories.

CAANZ chief executive Paul Head says the industry is evolving rapidly and every year it has to introduce new categories or face challenges around its existing ones, which have been around for the 37 years of Axis.

“This year was no different and the entire judging panel have done a great job negotiating the challenges. We congratulate everyone who made it on to this year’s finalist list and look forward to seeing the cream that rises to the top,” he says.

In the Out of Home categories, Colenso BBDO’s makes an impressive mark with 19 entries among the 39, as well as topping the Media (four), Charity (eight), PR/Promo & Activation (six) and Magazine and Newspaper categories (15).

Colenso BBDO also makes 16 appearances in the Craft categories, behind The Sweet Shop’s 17 entries.

And in the Digital and Interactive categories, FCB Advertising and Ogilvy & Mather both receive 12 mentions, while Clemenger BBDO/Proximity receives nine in the Film & Video categories.

Winners will be announced at a gala dinner on 16 March at the ANZ Viaduct Event Centre.
