Auckland serves as the backdrop for latest global BMW campaign

A new global campaign shot by Flying Fish to promote the new BMW 1 series features some of the City of Sails’ most iconic sights.

The 45-second spot uses a number of locations for the video’s backdrop, with the car whizzing through Karangahape Road, Fort Lane and over the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The film was shot for German production company CZAR in early January, which is one of the quietest times of the year due to most holiday makers venturing out of Auckland. But it wasn’t without a few niggles along the way with a lot of streets in turmoil due to the Britomart extension.

“Hats off to ATEED and Film Auckland who, alongside the obvious challenges, made the filming process a pleasure,” says James Moore, managing director of Flying Fish.

“It was no mean feat negotiating the best inner-city shooting angles. Add to that, owning the Harbour Bridge via an impressive early morning rolling blockade.”

The ad, which will be aired worldwide by BMW, was directed by Martin Werner, one of Scandinavia’s most awarded and highly sought after commercial directors. Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto was also flown in to shoot the campaign, whose work features in films such as Wolf of Wall Street, Argo, Brokeback Mountain, and 8 Mile.

“Having Rodrigo work with us was an absolute highlight, although most of us wanted to know more about the infamous close-up scene between Margot and Leo in Wolf of Wall Street,” says Moore.
