Health on the high seas: Entries now open for APN McNally Classic

UPDATE: Entries for the APN McNally Classic are now open. To enter, contestants can register their own boat for $1500 +GST (covers up to six people) or join APN on one of theirs for $300+GST per head by heading to apnmcnallyclassic.co.nz. All funds raised from entry fees and the charity auction will go to Men’s Health Trust New Zealand.

“The purpose of Men’s Health Trust NZ is simple: to inspire men of all ages to make positive and rewarding lifestyle choices by providing education programmes, research and information that promotes good health,” says trustee Phil Clemas.

14 February: Andrew McNally, New Zealand Herald’s group advertising director, died unexpectedly in June last year. But his legacy will live on, not only because of the acknowledgment he has recently received by having his name attached to the trophy that will be given to the winner of APN’s Advertising Challenge, but also with the inaugural APN McNally Classic, a fishing tournament that aims to raise funds for men’s health.

Competition for spots amongst New Zealand’s leading agency and media executives is expected to be tight when the inaugural APN McNally Classic is held off Auckland on April 3 this year. And while the lure of the Hauraki Gulf, a few monsters of the deep and some frosty beverinos is usually more than enough to get fishos out of the office for a day, contestants will also be doing good and adding to the coffers of Men’s Health Trust New Zealand (which is now chaired APN Outdoor’s Phil Clemas).

APN NZ Media chief executive Martin Simons says McNally made a big impact in New Zealand during his time at the Herald and the advertising and marketing community wanted to do something to recognise his contribution.

“Andrew loved fishing and we thought an event to celebrate his love of being on the water was ideal. If we can use the tournament to raise the profile of men’s health and encourage at least one more person to have a health check-up, then we will consider this tournament a success.”

The McNally Classic will be hosted by celebrity fisherman, Herald columnist and friend of McNally, Geoff Thomas, who will lead the charge on his boat (there will be some places up for grabs).

A number of other boats are being organised to participate on the day but early bookings are advised. Each boat entered will pay a fee and compete for prizes in the categories of longest catch, most unusual catch and hard luck story.

All participants will be invited to join a prize giving and dinner hosted by celebrity chef Michael Van de Elzen, renowned as an advocate of healthy eating. He will design the menu and be on hand for anyone wanting to yarn about how to survive being a guy in this modern world of fit, fast and furious.

The event will culminate in a charity auction, fronted by New Zealand’s leading real estate auctioneer and Australasian auctioneer of the year, Daniel Coulson from Bayleys Real Estate.

More details on how to enter will follow in the next few weeks, but to register your interest visit nzherald.co.nz/apnmcnallyclassic
