Alt Group keeps cookin’ in the Social Kitchen

All the Kiwi design shops missed out in Cannes, but Alt Group has been awarded five red dots, including a sought-after red dot: best of the best in the red dot awards in Berlin for The Social Kitchen, a project created for Fisher & Paykel in collaboration with The Engine Room restaurant and furniture design company IMO, following on from the silver Clio award it won in New York.

The awards recognise the best in product design, communication design and design concepts from around the world. And this year fifteen jury members evaluated each one of the 6,823 entries over several days.

The red dot jury selected only 63 red dot: best of the best awards, which are given for exceptional creative achievements.

Featuring two kitchen displays within a modified shipping container, a one-off custom table seating 50 people under a ‘blow up’ cube, and a series of classic New Zealand dishes reinvented, The Social Kitchen was a pop up installation at Britomart designed to reflect Fisher & Paykel’s kitchen design philosophy, demonstrating the evolving role of the kitchen as the social hub in people’s everyday lives (Alt Group’s print campaign is also a favourite of ours here ar StopPress).

It saw Alt Group design everything from wait staff uniforms, custom designed serving platters, a menu presented on t-shirts and a newspaper and video documenting the design process of each contributor from ideation to delivery.

Alt also won another four red dots for a number of projects, including: Homestar’s identity, an online home performance tool created for the New Zealand Green Building Council; Box Café, created for The Edge, New Zealand’s largest performing arts centre; Wrong Note, a promotional music poster, and for the The Social Kitchen.

Professor Dr Peter Zec, the founder and chief executive of the awards, says success among the thousands of submissions from 43 countries provides the winners with “an important competitive advantage and impressively shows that the laureates have competed with the most creative minds in the industry”.

The red dot winners will be celebrated at a glittering awards ceremony in the Konzerthaus Berlin on October 24, 2012, when the supreme award, the Red Dot:Grand Prix will be announced (last year only ten were awarded in communication design).

All of the award winning works will be on show at a special exhibition in the Alte Munze Berlin from October 25-28, 2012.

As for the other big winners, you can check out the product design best of the best from 2012 here on the, slightly ironically, poorly designed red dot website.
